India is a country which remains obsessed with cricket 24/7, every month and every year. But sometimes some events shift their interest to some other sports as well. London Olympic 2012 is one of such events. Recently an eight member Indian Boxing team has left for London. The team has left for their 10 days camp in London and it will enter the Games Village on July 22. The chief coach of Indian Boxing team is Gurbax Singh Sandhu. Coach Sandhu is quite aware that the performance that Indian boxing team had given in 2008 Beijing Olympics had raised the expectations. The eight members Indian boxing team which includes one female boxer as well has some experienced and some young members this time. Apart from very much known Indian boxers Vijender Singh and MC Mary Kom, Jai Bhagwan, Devendro Singh, Sumit Sangwan, Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishan are the members of this team. Vijender Singh has won the historic Bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics and therefore everyone is expecting at least one medal from the team because of him. He himself also is aware that his previous performance has increased peoples expectations from him manifold. “Last time it was a bronze; now I will try my level best to win either a silver medal or gold.- said Vijender at the send-off ceremony for the Indian boxers.
In this team where there will be seven male boxers, MC Mary Kom will be the only woman boxer from India. But this boxer is much more experienced and professional than any other player in the team. Though this is her first chance to participate in Olympic Games but she would not be that nervous as MC Mary Kom is a five time World Champion in womens boxing. Of course country will have expectations from her as well. I am happy, but the high expectations give me a lot of stress. I try to chat with my coach and family to avoid stress.- told MC Mary Kom. It will be the third chance for 60Kg boxer Jai Bhagwan. He believes that though the 60 Kg is the tough category but this time he is going to give his best efforts to win the medal. He is feeling hungrier for a medal after his previous two failed attempts in 2004 and 2008. 19 year old Shiva Thapa is the youngest in the team. He has got his entry into the London Olympics by defeating Japans Satoshi Shimizu. He is one of the most excited members of the team as well. 20 year old Devendro Singh is the second youngest in the team. Shiva Thapa is in 59 Kg Category while Devendro Singh will play for 49 Kg Mens Light Flyweight category. Sumit Sangwan will be playing for 81 Kg, Vijender Singh for 75 Kg, Vikas Krishan Yadav in 69 Kg and Manoj Kumar will be playing in 64 Kg category.
